Thanksgiving at Incarnation

A reflection by Kathy Bingley DeCoster

“Camp in summer – check. Camp in winter – check. Camp for Thanksgiving? What an intriguing idea!

When the email from Incarnation first came across my desk announcing the first ever Thanksgiving at camp, I realized that it was, for me, a perfect time to try it out. It was a wonderful event! The staff really gave this some thought and provided us with just the right mix of relaxation and activities like making gingerbread houses, doing arts and crafts, and getting outside and into the activities center. I enjoyed hiking around Bushy Hill Lake (twice!), remembering how to make lanyards (poorly!), recalling camp songs long forgotten and roasting marshmallows over a campfire.

The food is always delicious at the Lodge, but Thanksgiving dinner was really superb—made better no doubt by the fact that I didn’t have to do anything. Between what the kitchen staff baked and what the guests brought, I think there were at least 15 pies and desserts of all kinds!

My hat’s off to the Incarnation Center staff for coming up with the great idea to host a Thanksgiving guest period, and for pulling it off so wonderfully. Incarnation means so many things to so many people, but at Thanksgiving Incarnation truly is a great place that we can all call “home” for a few days.”
